5 signs that it's time to replace your boiler

1. Frequent breakdowns
The first item on our list is the clearest indication that your boiler needs replacing. If you find yourself arranging for repairs for a boiler that is regularly breaking down, it might be time to consider getting a new one. It's not unusual for a boiler to encounter minor issues, and if you make sure to arrange annual boiler servicing boiler servicing, any problems can be diagnosed early and effectively.
But if you find yourself shelling out regularly for repairs and replacement parts, it's a sign that you're swimming against a tide that's only going to get stronger. If you're in any doubt as to whether you'd be better to replace an old boiler rather than continue repairing it, get in touch with us at Koziwarm and we'll be able to offer you expert advice.
2. Strange noises
Boilers and central heating systems can be noisy at the best of times, but we become accustomed to the typical sounds of our homes. Most are completely normal, usually the noise of water flowing through the pipes or the boiler firing up as it switches on.
But if you notice that your boiler is making noises that you don't recognise - loud bangs, strange gurgling, or shrill whistles - then it could suggest that something isn't right. It could be a blockage, limescale build up, or a more serious internal fault that will eventually cause your boiler to stop working entirely. Before this happens, make sure to call Koziwarm, who'll be able to diagnose the problem.
3. Unusual sights or smells
As well as using your ears to notice a problem, it's a good idea to use your other senses too. If you ever notice any strange smells coming from your boiler, especially an eggy, sulphur smell, it could be a gas leak. This shouldn't be ignored. Turn off your boiler, open a window, and call the National Gas Emergency helpline on 0800 111 999, who'll advise you on the next steps.
Also keep an eye on your pilot light, which should always be burning blue. A yellow or orange flame is a sign that there is an issue that should be evaluated by an engineer as soon as possible. Similarly, if you notice that your boiler is dripping water, this may indicate a damaged internal seal. Again, your best move is to switch off the boiler and give us a call.
4. Increased energy bills
It's not always immediately obvious that there is a problem with your boiler. If your radiators are warming up as normal and you've hot water running through your taps, you'll have no reason to suspect anything is wrong. Until your energy bill lands on the doorstep, that is.
If you notice that your heating bills are steadily increasing, don't just assume it's because energy prices have gone up or because the kids are never off the Xbox. Examine your bills for an unexpected spike in gas usage, which might be down to an ageing boiler that is becoming less efficient. An inefficient boiler means that it uses more gas to heat the house, causing bills to rise. Replacing it now could save money in the long run.
5. Age of the boiler
Even if your boiler isn't showing any of the troublesome signs mentioned above, note that modern domestic boilers have a typical lifespan of around 10 to 15 years. Of course, not every boiler is the same and, especially if you've made sure to service your boiler annually, there's every chance yours will reach the upper end of that scale before it starts to struggle.
It's therefore important to know when your boiler was originally installed, ideally with the documentation provided by the engineer. This will allow you to plan ahead so that you're not caught out should your boiler suddenly stop working.
